The tex–lock as a secure bike lock for e-bikes: tested by an e-bike professional
Estimated reading time: 0 minutes
The popularity of e-bikes is steadily increasing, but unfortunately not only among riders, but also among thieves. The fear of e-bike theft is correspondingly high, so a good bicycle lock for e-bikes is essential for reliable protection.
But which type of lock is best suited to e-bikes? We take a closer look at the various bike locks and provide practical tips on how you can best protect your e-bike from theft. After all, thieves don't just target the electric bikes themselves, but also the valuable individual parts.
Find out in this article how easy it is to use the tex–lock bike lock to protect the e-bike itself and all its important parts from theft, so you can let your beloved bike out of your sight without a care in the world.

Why secure bike locks are important for e-bikes
For 90% of respondents in the study "Texlock New Bike Mobility Monitor 2023" the longevity of the e-bike is particularly important. The investment should therefore pay off for as long as possible.
However, poorly secured e-bikes are easy pickings for thieves and the detection rate for stolen bikes and e-bikes is abysmal.
Since the end of the coronavirus pandemic, the bicycle theft rate has been on the rise again. In 2022, 15,000 more bicycles were (officially) stolen than in 2021, with the amount of damage reaching a sad peak, according to the General Association of Insurers (GDV) announced:
This is also shown by the insurance benefits for bicycle theft, which have been rising continuously since 2013:
The trend is mainly to steal particularly expensive bicycles:
According to the "Texlock New Bike Mobility Monitor 2023", 16% of Germans see the risk of theft of e-bikes as an obstacle to greater use.
However, the fear of becoming a victim of clever bike thieves doesn't have to stop you from buying an e-bike!
If you secure your electric bike with a high-quality e-bike lock that meets the special security requirements of e-bikes, you can enjoy it for a long time.
Special safety requirements for e-bike locks
The different security requirements for e-bike locks compared to locks for normal bikes are mainly due to the higher value and special features of e-bikes.
1. higher value:
The financial loss in the event of an e-bike theft is therefore all the greater.
This requires a lock that has a correspondingly high level of theft protection and offers strong resistance to attempts to break it open with bolt cutters, saws, etc. as well as to drilling and picking.
2. valuable individual parts:
E-bikes are equipped with particularly valuable components, such as powerful batteries and electric motors.
A secure lock for e-bikes must therefore not only protect the entire bike, but also protect valuable individual parts from theft.
3. weight and mobility:
E-bikes and pedelecs are heavier than conventional bicycles due to the built-in batteries and electric motors. However, for over 70% of those surveyed, weight is an important criterion when buying a new e-bike.
A good bike lock for an e-bike should therefore not add to the weight and unnecessarily impair the mobility of the e-bike.
4. adaptability to individual designs:
Due to the special design of e-bikes, which often have thicker frames than conventional bikes, for example, it must be ensured that e-bike bike locks are long, flexible and wide enough to secure the most important bike parts.
5. paint protection:
For almost half of all respondents, a stylish design plays a major role when buying an electric bike. What a shame it is if the e-bike or pedelec lock causes ugly paint scratches due to sharp corners and edges!
A good e-bike lock therefore ensures that you don't have to worry about your paintwork.
Overall, an e-bike safety lock should therefore be robust, weather-resistant, flexible and gentle on the paintwork in order to be able to enjoy the benefits and fun of an electric bike 100%.
There are several options for this.
Find the best bike lock for your e-bike
The best-known bicycle locks include U-locks, folding locks, cable locks, chain locks and frame locks. And textile locks, such as the tex–lock.
You can find out the general advantages and disadvantages of the various locks in the bike lock comparison.
Because the tex–lock combines the advantages of all types of bike lock, it is not only ideal a good lock for protecting normal bikes, but even more so for e-bikes.
U-lock for e-bike vs. tex–lock
High-quality hardened steel U-locks are among the most secure bike locks for e-bikes.
The thicker the steel shackle, the harder it is for cutting tools of all kinds to get through, but the heavier the shackle lock itself. As they are also not very flexible, locking and unlocking them can be awkward. Only rarely can several valuable e-bike parts be secured.
If the e-bike U-lock is too narrow, it won't even get around the wide frame of the electric bike or all fixed objects. However, the larger the e-bike U-lock is, the more bulky it is to transport and handle. And the easier it is to pick the lock using leverage.
With the eyelet U/X-lock Bundle , you can secure many valuable components at the same time with a cable length of up to 160 cm and do not need a large, heavy e-bike U-lock.
Thanks to the two bars of different lengths , you can also decide which of the two bars fits better. So that you can get around all the e-bike parts to be secured well enough and at the same time leave as little leverage as possible.
In addition, both shackles have a double-sided locking mechanism so that a thief has to break open both sides before he can open the lock.
Chain lock for e-bikes vs. tex–lock
An e-bike chain lock is particularly flexible and can therefore easily wrap around all parts of the electric bike. The longer and higher quality it is, the more valuable components can be reliably secured, but the heavier it is.
Only rarely are all parts of chain locks fully encased, which can lead to paint scratches on the e-bike and also makes the lock more susceptible to weather influences - and therefore less durable.
The flexibility of the individual chain links makes it more difficult for potential thieves to attach cutting tools, but they rattle annoyingly in your ears while riding.
The tex–lock e-bike lock makes use of precisely these advantages: The hardened steel chain inside the textile cable also makes it more difficult for cutting tools to attach and get through.
However, because the chain in the tex–lock is surrounded by several layers of textile fibers, nothing rattles when tex–lock . In addition, all parts of the tex-lock are fully encased, which makes the lock resistant to the elements and reliably protects the beautiful e-bike paintwork from scratches.
Folding lock for e-bikes vs. tex–lock
High-quality folding locks for e-bikes offer a relatively high level of theft protection. However, the higher the resistance to attempted break-ins and the larger it is to secure several bike parts at the same time, the heavier the e-bike folding lock is.
The steel segments can be folded compactly for transportation, but the folding lock is all the more rigid and adapts less well to the individual design of e-bikes.
To ensure that the folding lock for the e-bike lasts a long time, dirt must be removed regularly. The low maintenance that almost 80% of all respondents in the "Texlock New Bike Mobility Monitor 2023" study wanted when buying a new e-bike is therefore not a given. At least not if you want to enjoy the lock for a long time.
Cable lock for e-bikes vs. tex–lock
The thinner the e-bike cable lock is, the lighter and more flexible it is. However, the less resistance it offers to bolt cutters and the like.
The thicker the cable, the greater the theft protection, but the heavier and less flexible it becomes. Convenience therefore always comes at the expense of security with an e-bike cable lock.
The tex–lock is as flexible as a thin cable lock and at the same time as secure as a particularly thick cable lock for e-bikes.
This is because the core of the textile rope is surrounded by extremely resistant high-performance fibers, all of which have a special protective function. Thanks to this clever design, the steel core does not have to be extremely thick to ensure a high level of theft protection.
Visitors to the Tollwood Festival will show you just how much resistance the textile fibers and the steel chain put up, as they failed to get the sturdy textile rope to crack the robust textile rope. Take a look:
E-bikes with frame lock vs. tex–lock
Many e-bikes have an integrated frame lock. This is advantageous if you are only out of reach for a short time and can keep an eye on the e-bike, e.g. through the shop window.
However, in order to reliably secure the electric bike against theft for a longer period of time, it should at least be connected to a solid object . A frame lock alone is therefore not sufficient protection against theft.
Even if an alarm is triggered when the e-bike is moved. This may deter some thieves, but not everyone.
A frame lock is therefore more suitable as an additional anti-theft device in combination with another e-bike lock, such as the tex–lock mate.
By flexibly and easily wrapping around all important e-bike parts and fixed objects and connecting to all standard frame locks, it provides reliable theft protection.
Electronic lock for e-bike battery and motor
Some electric bikes and pedelecs are equipped with electronic locks for the e-bike battery and motor. These can often be controlled not only physically, but also via an app.
The battery can then no longer be removed and the rear wheel motor locks so that the e-bike can no longer be rolled away . Even if this protects valuable e-bike components from theft: However, the electric bike can be carried away.
That's why e-bike expert Christian didn't feel comfortable leaving the Lemmo One out of sight with just the two electronic locks and combined them with the tex–lock eyelet for security.
The tex–lock eyelet in the e-bike lock test
E-bike professional and blogger Christian Schindler has extensively tested the Lemmo One urban e-bike, which is designed to fulfill many wishes for commuters and digital remote workers, at Lake Constance. He also tested the tex–lock eyelet as a bike lock for e-bikes.
In his field report he emphasizes the combination of state-of-the-art technology and practical features that make the Lemmo One an "e-bike for smart riders". This includes the electronic locking of the battery and rear wheel motor described above.
Pressing two buttons on the handlebars at the same time activates the two electronic e-bike locks . Although an alarm system would sound if the bike were to be moved, it does not stop there:
A tex–lock can also ensure maximum safety for your e-bike.
How to find the best bike lock for your e-bike
Which lock is best for your e-bike depends on whether you want to connect your electric bike particularly quickly, whether your e-bike already has a frame lock or electronic locks, whether you want to secure as many bike parts as possible and whether you want to take out e-bike insurance.
The police have issued the following e-bike lock recommendation for expensive electric bikes:
Many bicycle insurance companies set specific requirements, such as those of the police, for bicycle locks for e-bikes. This means that you will only be covered if your e-bike lock meets the requirements. In many cases, for example, an e-bike frame lock alone is not sufficient.
In this case, the tex–lock mate is the reliable extension for your e-bike frame lock and allows you to secure many valuable e-bike parts at the same time at solid object .
An equally safe combination is the tex–lock eyelet in the U/X-lock Bundle , which has been awarded the ART*2 certificate and the Sold Secure label. This combination guarantees a particularly high level of protection.
For faster fastening and protection, especially if important parts are already electronically protected, the tex–lock orbit may be a suitable choice. This lock is also ART*2-certified.
