Expected Reading Time: 14 Minutes

But which type of lock is the best for e-bikes?
We compare different e-bike locks and show you how easy, practical and secure a tex–lock bike lock can be to protect your e-bike and all its valuable parts from theft. So you can let your beloved electric bike out of your sight without a care in the world.
Table of contents
A secure bike lock for your e-bike is essential!
The bicycle theft rate is rising steadily, the detection rate of (reported) thefts is subterranean and the amount of damage incurred by German bicycle insurers has reached a sad peak:
The trend is to steal particularly expensive bikes. The worse secured they are, the easier it is to steal e-bikes.
Therefore, secure your electric bike with a high-quality e-bike lock that meets the special security requirements. This will increase your chances of enjoying it for a long time.
Special safety requirements for e-bike locks
A good bike lock for e-bikes must offer a particularly high level of theft protection in order to protect the higher value of e-bikes compared to normal bikes. The lock must be long and flexible enough to secure the wide frame and valuable components such as the battery and motor. At the same time, it must not unnecessarily increase the weight of the already heavy e-bike or scratch the paintwork. To summarize, the special requirements for e-bike locks arise from:
A good e-bike lock should therefore be particularly robust, flexible, paint-friendly and weather-resistant so that it lasts a long time. There are several options for this.
The different types of bike lock for e-bikes
The tex–lock combines the advantages of all types of bike lock and is therefore not only ideal suitable for protecting normal bikes, but even more so as a good lock for e-bikes. You can find out how well the tex–lock generally performs in comparison to U-locks, folding locks, cable locks, chain locks and frame locks in the Bike lock comparison.
U-lock for e-bikes
High-quality hardened steel U-locks are among the most secure locks for e-bikes. The thicker the steel shackle, the more difficult it is for cutting tools to get through - but the lock also becomes heavier, less flexible and - the larger it is - offers more points of attack for leverage. Locking and unlocking can be awkward and it is often not possible to secure several e-bike parts at the same time. A U-lock that is too narrow, on the other hand, often does not fit around the wide frame of an e-bike and fixed objects.
tex–lock vs. U-locks
With the D-lock and U/X-lock at eyelet Bundle , you can secure many valuable e-bike components at the same time. The rope and the variable brackets of the U/X-lock make the connection flexible. This allows you to secure all e-bike parts and minimize leverage at the same time. The D-lock has only one shackle, but fits around almost all e-bike components and impresses with its combination of security and low weight. It is the lightest Sold Secure Diamond and ART*3 U-lock and protects vehicles with a high risk of theft.
Chain lock for e-bikes
An e-bike chain lock is flexible and can be easily wrapped around all parts of the electric bike. The longer and higher quality it is, the more components can be secured, but the weight also increases. Exposed chain links can cause paint scratches and are more susceptible to weather influences, which reduces the service life. The flexibility makes it more difficult for thieves to attach cutting tools, but can rattle annoyingly while riding.
tex–lock vs. chain locks
The tex–lock combines these advantages: The hardened steel chain inside the textile rope makes it difficult for cutting tools to get through. Thanks to the textile fibers, nothing rattles when tex–lock . In addition, all parts are fully sheathed, making it weatherproof and paint-friendly.
High-quality folding locks for e-bikes
High-quality folding locks offer a high level of theft protection, but are heavier the larger and more resistant they are. Although the steel segments can be folded compactly, they are rigid and adapt poorly to e-bikes. Folding locks need to be cleaned regularly to ensure durability, which does not correspond to the low-maintenance use desired by almost 80% of respondents in the "Texlock New Bike Mobility Monitor 2023".
tex–lock vs. folding locks
The tex–lock offers a flexible and lightweight alternative to folding locks. It adapts well to the individual design of e-bikes and enables several components to be secured at the same time. Thanks to the textile fiber coating, the tex–lock is resistant to weather influences and does not cause any damage to the paintwork. It also requires less maintenance and remains noiseless, which meets the demand for low-maintenance solutions.
Cable lock for e-bikes
Although a thin e-bike cable lock is light and flexible, it does not offer sufficient resistance to bolt cutters - which is a basic requirement for protection against e-bike theft. A thicker cable increases theft protection, but is heavier and less flexible. Convenience therefore always comes at the expense of security with an e-bike cable lock.
tex–lock vs. cable locks
The tex–lock combines the flexibility of a thin cable lock with the security of a thick cable lock. The core of the textile cable is surrounded by resistant high-performance fibers that offer a special protective function. This means that the steel core does not have to be extremely thick to ensure a high level of theft protection. The textile fibers and the steel chain offer strong resistance, as visitors to the Tollwood Festival showed when they failed to break through the robust tex–lock .
E-bikes with frame lock
Many e-bikes have an integrated frame lock, which is only practical if you only take your eyes off the e-bike for a short time. However, the e-bike should be connected to a solid object for longer periods of time, so a frame lock alone does not provide sufficient protection against theft. Even an integrated alarm will not deter every thief.
tex–lock vs. frame locks
This tex–lock mate is suitable ideal as a supplement to a frame lock. It can be flexibly and easily wrapped around all important e-bike parts and fixed objects, providing reliable theft protection. The frame lock cable can be combined with all standard frame locks and provides optimum protection for the e-bike.
Electronic lock for e-bike battery and motor
Some e-bikes are equipped with electronic locks for the battery and motor, which can often be controlled via an app. The battery cannot then be removed and the motor locked so that the e-bike cannot be rolled away. Nevertheless, the e-bike can still be carried away.
tex–lock vs. electronic locks
The tex–lock offers additional protection by securing the e-bike to a solid object . E-bike expert Christian didn't feel comfortable leaving the Lemmo One unattended with just electronic locks, so he combined them with the tex–lock eyelet for maximum security.
Convinced: The tex–lock eyelet in the e-bike lock test
E-bike expert Christian Schindler tested the Lemmo One on Lake Constance using the tex–lock eyelet . In his field report he praises the combination of state-of-the-art technology and practical features of the Lemmo One, which is considered an "e-bike for smart riders". The electronic locking of the battery and motor is activated by pressing two buttons on the handlebars, and although an alarm system sounds when movement is detected, he supplements the protection with the tex–lock eyelet .
A tex–lock can also ensure maximum safety for your e-bike.
Find the best tex–lock lock for your e-bike
Which tex–lock is the best lock for your e-bike depends on several factors: Whether you want to connect your electric bike particularly quickly, your e-bike already has a frame lock or electronic locks, the number of bike parts to be secured and whether you want to take out e-bike insurance. The police recommend the following for expensive electric bikes:
Extension for e-bike frame lock
Many insurance companies have similar requirements for e-bike locks and you will only be covered if your lock meets them. In many cases, for example, an e-bike frame lock alone is not enough. In this case, the tex–lock mate is the reliable extension for your e-bike frame lock and secures many e-bike parts to fixed objects.
U-lock with extension
A safe combination is the tex–lock eyelet in the U/X-lock Bundle , certified with ART2and Sold Secure. For particularly high security, the eyelet D-lock Bundle offers ART3 and Sold Secure Diamond certifications. (Find out in our U-lock guide whether the D-lock or U/X-lock is the best U-lock. best U-lock is the best U-lock for you).
Extension for electronic e-bike lock
